Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) was conceived by Dr. Richard C Cabot as a method oflearning pastoral practice under supervision in a clinical setting. The Rev. Anton Boisenenlarged the concept to include a case study method of theological inquiry – a study of theperson as a “living human document.”
As CPE developed, it was expanded by other CPE leaders to integrate into pastoral practiceknowledge of medicine, psychology and behavioural sciences. Today many supervisorsemphasize the importance of pastoralrelationships being formed through an integration ofpersonal history, behavioural theory and method, and spiritual development.
